The Following Is From The City of Calgary:
We’re excited to let you know about upcoming work in Sue Higgins Park to improve access to the Bow River — making it safer, more sustainable, and more enjoyable for all Calgarians.
What’s happening:
As part of the Sue Higgins River Access Restoration Project, we’re replacing steep, unsafe drop-offs with gently sloped gravel ramps and natural features. These upgrades will improve safety for families, seniors, and dog owners while preserving the park’s natural beauty.
Over the years, heavy use and erosion have worn down the riverbank, creating safety concerns and harming water quality. This project will stabilize the bank, protect aquatic habitats, and prevent more costly repairs in the future — all guided by environmental assessments and ecological best practices.
What Calgarians can expect:
1. Construction will begin early August 2025 and is expected to last about four months, pending weather and more
2. River access will only be restricted at the single spot where we are actively working, other access points will remain open
3. Clear signage and safe access routes will be in place throughout the work
4. Parking, roadways and pathways will remain open
5. The dog park will remain open and accessible for the community, though equipment may need to be temporarily moved across the off-leash area
This project reflects our commitment to protecting the park’s ecological richness while improving how people experience this beloved green space. Once complete, the restored areas will blend naturally into the landscape — like they’ve always been there.
